Goring Fire fighters 10k challenge in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support

On Sunday 4 March six of our fire fighters from Goring will be taking part in the Goring 10k to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, and just to make it a bit more of a challenge Nick Harris (22), Kevin Thorne (46), Matt Holroyd (26), Jon Holroyd (21), Duncan Kent (45) and Kevin Maslen (41) will be running in full fire-fighting uniform (‘Fire kit’).

Fire kit is very heavy and is designed to protect fire-fighters at operational incidents that involve extremely hot and humid conditions; it is not therefore kit ideal for running!

For one of our fire fighters, Nick Harris, Macmillan Cancer Support is a charity that is very close to his heart. For the past six and a half years Nick’s mother, Mandy, battled with breast cancer. For a while her condition seemed to be under control but sadly, before Christmas, it worsened. Mandy continued to fight her cancer, bravely facing the challenge every day and she did so with the help and support of the wonderful nurses from Macmillan. On Wednesday 18 January 2012, with her family by her side, Mandy died. Nick and the rest of Goring’s fire fighters hope that you will support them by cheering them along on the day
