Employee Relations and Resource Officer Paul Bremble says, ‘This is a wonderful opportunity for people who are interested in becoming an on-call fire fighter, to find out more about the role. There will be a talk about the recruitment process and the role of ‘on-call’, a look around the equipment as well as trying out some of the kit such as the fire equipment on the appliance, cutting equipment, breathing apparatus, ladders, and water rescue equipment.
We need more on-call fire fighters to ensure that there are always fire appliances available. We are always looking to build on the work force we have so we can fill gaps in cover that appear throughout the day. Anyone is welcome to come along. We have recruited all kinds of people from professionals to mothers. Although there is no single type of person who wants to be an on-call fire fighter we do find they tend to be people who want to give something back to their communities.’ To become an on-call fire fighter you must live or work within five minutes of your local fire station and will have to pass a series of selection tests. Those selected will be paid a standby rate for being available when they are on call, plus an hourly rate for attending incidents, training and other duties
