Michael Godfrey 12.5.1940 – 14.9.2023

We sadly announce the sudden death on Thursday 14 September of Micheal Godfrey, aged 83 years, of Milldown Road. He was fondly known as Mick and Grandad Mick.

Mick was born in Goring and went to Goring School. He went on to do an apprenticeship at Reading College with Smallbone’s. He was an extremely talented carpenter, building furniture and kitchens for local families and later working for Bosher’s. He worked on many National Trust projects, churches and listed buildings, including Englefield Estates, Basildon Park and Farley Hall, to name a few. Mick also was very proud of working on Micheal Caine’s staircase. Alongside his carpentry, he was very proud to be a member of Goring Fire Station crew, right through until his retirement, following in his father and grandfather’s footsteps. In retirement, Mick would disappear to his work shed and build a rocking horse and wooden toy boxes and a castle for his grandchildren and great grandson. Mick enjoyed attending coffee mornings at the Free Church and other lunch clubs. Mick was a constant companion to my Mum until her passing, a Dad and Grandad in our lives and will be greatly missed by us all.
