Wallingford fire station danger

Wallingford’s fire station is at risk of closing because retirements and a lack of new recruits have left it short‑staffed. To tackle the problem, local firefighters will distribute inquiry cards to encourage more people to join as part‑time crew.

Chief Fire Officer Ken Bridges warned that the station may soon be unable to guarantee sending an engine to emergencies if numbers continue to fall. Wallingford relies entirely on part‑time firefighters, who receive a small annual retainer and payment for each call‑out, with slightly higher rates after three years of service. They also receive a small fee if they respond to the station but are not ultimately required.
