Part-time firefighters needed

Goring Fire Station faces an uncertain future if it cannot recruit more part-time firefighters.

Last year, the fire station answered 269 emergency calls, but without more retained firefighters it will not be able to maintain that level of service.

Just nine part-timers currently run the service instead of the full quota of 12, and in September the station's officer-in-charge, John Rumble, will be retiring after 28 years service.

Station Officer Kevin Parfitt said: "John is on call 24 hours a day which is very rare these days and his retirement will leave a huge gap at Goring Fire Station."

With nine volunteers there have been times when Goring fire engine has not been available and firefighters from Wallingford six miles away, have had to be called.
